What happened

On Varnax, Corran, Raven, MINO, Hana and Samira confront a Kharad command fleet, an adaptive infection and the dangerous inheritance called the Last Design. The Dream Engine offers an ideal future by removing the right to become otherwise. The companions refuse it, while local survivors turn rescue into accountable water, shelter and evidence rather than another heroic occupation. Hana’s independent audit and Samira’s petition work matter as much as Tempest’s impossible manoeuvres.

Where the book leaves us

The Last Design takes a cooperative form and is placed in civilian custody with safeguards, objections and the possibility of refusal. Hana chooses the audit trail she has built; Samira chooses the people who need her petition work. Their departures preserve affection without making intimacy a claim on either woman’s future. Corran and Raven continue together under terms they keep choosing rather than pretending to have solved. The victory remains deliberately narrow: Varnax has a chance to choose differently, without a guarantee that no one will ever misuse what remains.
