The Kharad

The violence of command—and what can remain after an empire fractures.

The Silence Before the Order

An imagined encounter with a familiar adversary. Original artwork, rather than an illustration of a specific passage.

Living people beneath the armour

The Kharad are organic, living humanoids, with two legs, two arms, hands, a head and a torso. Their bronze-and-charcoal ceramic armour, amber lenses and protected translucent inset give them a distinctive appearance; pale fibrous tissue moves beneath the inset as they breathe. The armour protects a living body. It does not make its wearer a machine.

Command systems and dependence can organise Kharad power without explaining every individual’s loyalties. A technician, a commander and someone living under a freight contract may understand the same institution differently. Professor Vaust’s role in consolidating Kharad charters does not make him their creator, and the Kharad remain distinct from the Silvers.

A signal that gives orders

The opening of The Throne of Ash reaches Tempest as a disturbing transmission. Corran identifies a Kharad connection. Raven challenges him: he has said their empire is fractured, yet something is still broadcasting. That discrepancy is the starting point of an investigation, rather than evidence that every familiar expectation still applies.

A legacy in the wreckage

The travellers encounter a burned landscape, remnants of armour, and a structure resembling a vastly enlarged broken casing. Raven reads the markings as language; Corran interprets them as a command chain with the force of ritual. The scene makes the aftermath of domination part of the danger.

What makes the encounter personal

For this Corran, recognition carries an obligation to look more closely. Past experience can help him identify a threat, but the world in front of him may contain people and mechanisms that the old category does not fully explain. Raven’s questioning keeps that uncertainty present.

Reading boundary

This profile covers the opening of Book 11 only. It introduces the saga’s use of a familiar adversary without revealing the later explanation, resolution or the wider state of the Kharad.

LIFE UNDER KHARAD DEPENDENCY
