The opening situation
A Kharad-derived signal leads towards burned Varnax. The story explores how an old hierarchy can persist in ruins, habits and new promises. Corran and his companions must examine the attraction of a perfect future while confronting systems built to make obedience feel inevitable.
Who travels here
Corran, Raven and MINO travel with systems auditor Hana Seo. Her independent evidence work and her developing relationship with Corran continue from the previous book; the companions bring different expectations as well as different skills to Varnax.
A question to carry into the story
Ask whether a replacement system distributes power or merely changes the voice issuing orders. Recovery needs more than the fall of a commander.
