What happened
Kells has activated a legacy machine swarm in pursuit of quotas. Corran and companions work with local people on physical containment, while testimony exposes the decisions behind the danger. Hearings and contractual consequences become part of the response, not an optional epilogue to the engineering.
Where the book leaves us
Jun stays to teach, and Yara joins the travellers. Corran and Raven make room for independent privacy and pleasure within their love; their dedicated conversation changes how they share care. Corran acknowledges attraction to Yara while explicitly declining reciprocal romantic love, leaving her choice and feelings her own. The later HARP-7/CORMORANT relay investigation ends with a technician captured and returned to Tala. The wider network survives beyond this local success. The book distinguishes work completed here from an entire system supposedly made safe forever.
