Full Version
The opening situation
Mnem on Vethara is a place where memory can be deposited. A return to the Memory House forces Corran to examine an old act of relief and the people living with its consequences. This is an intimate investigation into what a truthful account asks of the person who would rather leave it unfinished.
The people of the story
Corran, Raven, MINO and Yara travel to Mnem. Fen, Sable, Callum and Korrath have lives rooted in the city; Zanele Dlamini visits for her own research, and sign painter Irena Cross brings another local perspective. Della Voss is encountered through the historical record.
A question to carry into the story
Watch the difference between retaining a record and accepting responsibility for it. Listening to someone else’s account can change the meaning of a memory Corran already possesses. Della’s account preserves pleasure and affection as well as disappointment; testimony does not automatically restore Corran’s missing memories. Present relationships make their own demands on his attention.
