What happened

A deposit made after Corran left Della has left a Remanent troubling the House and its residents. Della’s testimony and Corran’s honest acknowledgement allow the central disturbance to resolve. Fen, Sable and Callum remain people with their own work and unfinished recoveries.

Zanele pursues voluntary-memory safeguards for her own cases elsewhere. Her relationship with Corran develops during the recovery days; their private evening, candid aftermath and independent farewell do not turn her into his lawyer or give her access to Della’s testimony.

Where the book leaves us

On Serantha, the crew take time to rest. Corran writes without leaving out the inconvenient parts; Raven proposes the Arcturan worlds. Back in Mnem, Callum has arranged a review with Fen and can set its limits without committing to a full retrieval. His new relationship with Irena Cross gives him pleasure and the prospect of another supper while leaving his work and recovery his own. The House rests, while repair continues at a human pace.

The dedicated chapter “The Record Between Us” lets Raven and Corran distinguish privacy from secrecy, confront the age and cultural assumptions between them, and choose a further private night without treating sex as an answer to every argument. Yara subsequently chooses another encounter with Corran while naming the love he cannot return. She retains the choice to continue or stop; the crew leave for the seven-world dispute without forcing her feelings into a tidy resolution.
