The opening situation

Florence in March 1348 confronts Corran with a catastrophe he cannot simply undo. A distinct threat to memory complicates the crisis, but does not explain away the natural plague. The adventure asks what help can mean when it cannot mean saving everyone.

Who travels here

Corran, Ava, Cal and Anna. In Florence they meet Matteo and Lucia, whose lives and choices matter beyond what the travellers can do for them.

A question to carry into the story

Keep the historical disaster separate from the speculative threat. The book makes remembering people an action with consequences, not just an expression of sympathy.

Intimacy and ethical restraint

The opening private interval belongs to Ava and Cal. The plague then removes credible privacy and capacity while children, patients and mourners require attention. Desire is acknowledged without converting care into courtship. That restraint carries the series’ central concern with coexistence: another person’s need cannot be appropriated as proof of closeness. Later, a station stop gives Corran and the independent engineer Sahana Rell room for candid adult attraction, once urgent work is finished.
