The opening situation
Corran arrives on Asterune and finds a stillness that demands investigation. A brass owl and the traces of an erased history draw the story towards the institutions that decide whose lives can be recorded. This is a major point of entry for Raven and MINO, best read after the departures in Book 6.
Who travels here
Corran, Raven and MINO.
Corran and Raven’s attraction develops through wit, disagreement and chosen closeness. Her investigation has aims of its own, and their growing interest does not settle what either expects from the other.
A question to carry into the story
Ask who has the power to call something consent when alternatives have been removed. The familiar world becomes strange through the absences in its own account.
Asterunian conservator Nia Serevin brings a history Corran cannot independently remember and work that does not revolve around him. Reconstruction gives adult relationships room to develop alongside the public argument over memory. Local archivist Edda Marr and printer Halden Mere have their own work, damaged trust and private choices; the city’s change reaches beyond the travelling companions.
