What happened

The system controlling the Returned lies behind the crisis and a grief ritual that uses polymer material and entrainment. The crew expose the mechanism and secure Muir alive. Fire and evacuation make the crisis physical as well as emotional, and containment cannot undo the harm already done.

Where the book leaves us

The aftermath records seven confirmed dead and three missing. A warning is broadcast; the archival courier is held cold behind an independent pressure door. Civil Response arrives and accepts the medical, environmental, quarantine and custody handover. The community’s recovery remains unfinished. After relief and medical assessment, Raven chooses a private night with Daniel Mercer, who stays with the response team. Corran and Raven then speak candidly about desire, jealousy and their other relationships, choose a shared room and renew their intimacy. Yara retains her own agency and her distinct relationship with Corran. Their love continues through practical choices rather than a promise that nobody will ever feel hurt.
